diy headboard

The materials you will need for this extravaganza:

Take a deep breath and get ready:

  1. Measure the space for the headboard and get a piece of wood cut for that space (Tip: take a car that can actually hold that piece of wood, I did not)

  2. Mark on the wood where the buttons will go for the tufts and then drill large enough holes for twine to go through easily

  3. Spray glue the foam/mattress covers to the wood (patterned sides together if using mattress toppers) and then lay the batting over and staple to the back of wood

  4. Pick a fabric and get enough so that there’s extra to make buttons and enough to drape over the sides comfortably

  5. Lay the fabric over the foam

  6. Make an absolute ton of buttons. I chose to make my tufts close together so I made 136 buttons. Yes, 136

  7. Thread the needle with twine and poke through the back all the way to the top of the fabric, loop the button, and then go back through the same hole to the back

  8. On the back, there should be the twine doubled and you will need some strength at this point to pull them tight and then staple them to the back. Sometimes we stapled in a zig zag fashion to secure them. You might even need to hit them with a hammer because those suckers are hard to secure at times

  9. Repeat this literally a million times

  10. When all the buttons are done, start pleating each side lining up with the buttons and staple the fabric back

  11. You’re technically done but if you’re extra like me you can cover the back with fabric

11 ½. I finished mine with picture hooks to place it on the wall and then put molding around it because again, extra

12. Admire the masterpiece

Laying down the foam (it won't stick incredibly well but it's ok)
